Best Electric Can Opener

For some reason, the idea of pop-tab can opening for soup cans and vegetable cans has still not caught on with all of the canneries out there today.  I don’t know why, but the problem that this creates is that you are going to have to, at some point, probably within the next month, fight with a can in order to get to the contents. If you have a cat, this is a problem that you may face almost daily, and if you cook at home, it can be a common problem you experience as well.

There are a few ways you can handle this.  You can use the trick that was making the rounds on social media a few months back, where you just use friction to wear away at the can until the top can be easily removed by hand.  You can use a pocket knife (if you know anyone who has one).  You can use a simple disposable can opener, or a hand-cranked can opener, or you can go with an electric can opener.  And today, we shall be talking about how to find the best electric can opener for your home uses.

Hamilton Beach 76606ZA Smooth Touch Can Opener - The Standard Model

If you have a kitchen in your house or apartment, and you don’t have a Hamilton Beach appliance or tool of some sort, then you are a rare breed indeed.  Most people, especially those just starting out on their own, have a lot of Hamilton Beach appliances, and the things that they make tend to be high-quality products.

The Hamilton Beach Smooth Touch can opener is an easy can opener to use, one that requires almost no effort (which, honestly, is the whole point of the electric can opener).  The magnet holds the can in place, the can opener rotates the can as it opens, and then you release the handle on your Hamilton Beach can opener 76607 and the can is opened.  Pretty easy, wouldn’t you agree?

It’s a very reasonably priced model, and it will allow you to get all the functionality you need, while also ensure that you are going to be able to avoid worrying about the can falling and spilling its contents all over your counter.  Definitely a good buy, especially if you just need a standard countertop can opener.

PROS
  • Average in size
  • Easy-to-use
  • Magnets to prevent the can from falling
CONS
  • Nothing special, just a regular old can opener

Cuisinart CCO-50BKN Deluxe Electric Can Opener – The Home Chef Option

Cuisinart is another one of those companies that almost everyone has in their kitchen.  They make some of the most popular blenders and tabletop mixers that you see for sale today not only online, but in places like Target and WalMart (and Kmart, back before that whole business went under). As they have a decent background and a reasonable history in this very industry, you have every right to expect that their can opener will be a good one.

And this is the case.  Much like the Hamilton Beach 76607, the Cuisinart CCO- 50BKN is a simple-to-use affair, requiring very little effort.  It has a magnetic strip that holds the can in place, and in a nice bonus, it has a magnetic piece attached to the handle that, upon completion, allows you to open the can by touching the lever, rather than having to risk slicing your hand open on the can removing it yourself.

All in all, a good offering, and not something that you are likely to regret spending a little bit of money on, believe it or not.

PROS
  • Reasonably sized
  • Decently powerful motor
  • Best of all, the magnet removes the top for you
CONS
  • The magnets can weaken over time
3

Procter Silex Plus 76370P Extra-Tall Can Opener – The Contender

Proctor Silex, once again, is one of those companies that make a lot of kitchen appliances for everyday use, and they tend to make them well. They have a long history in the market, and this is not their first offering in the form of a can opener.

Now, this can opener does not have the magnet to hold the can that other can openers have, and more’s the pity.  It does have a magnet on the top handle, which helps to remove the top of the can when you finish can opening.

As with many of the other can openers, it cuts the top apart, and then you just use the lever and the magnet on it to remove the top of the can.  You’ll be glad to have that magnet to help you keep from slicing your hands open, believe you me.

This is a good offering if all you need is a basic can opener with a knife sharpener and a bottle opener.

PROS
  • Decent size
  • Easy to use
  • Trusted name
CONS
  • Just an average can opener with a few bells and whistles
4

Ovente CO36W Easy Open Electric Can Opener - The Mobile Option

Ovente is not as well known a company as the rest on this list thus far, but if you’re looking for a mobile can opener that you can carry in your pocket around the house, this is the one that you should be taking a look at.

The Ovente CO36WEasy Open Electric Can Opener is a simple can opener with one-button operation.  Honestly, the only complaint that I can find Is that you’re going to need to keep it fed with four AA batteries, which can be expensive and annoying.

All things considered, this is a good can opener, and an easy to use one, that you will not regret having, plus it doesn’t have to take up space on your kitchen counter (not to say that they’re not useful, but having to give up some counter space is not ideal). Definitely the best handheld electric can opener

PROS
  • Mobile
  • One-touch use
  • Doesn’t take up space on your counter
CONS
  • Requires 4x AA batteries

Best Electric Can Opener - Buyer's Guide

There is almost no one around who doesn’t need a can opener of some sort, and for a lot of people, when you first move into your own place, it is one of the first purchases that you will need to make.  There’s one question that most people have about this purchase, though, and we’re about to answer it.

Portable Or Countertop Can Openers; Which Is Right For Me?

This is a question that a lot of people have, and the answer is that you should use whichever is best for you.  I would suggest, however, that if you have the space on your countertop, you will find that the countertop opener does not require batteries, and it tends to work better.  Just something to think about, and if you aren’t living somewhere like Japan, where every centimeter of counter space is taken up with something else, you are going to be alright with leaving it on your counter, trust me.

Conclusion

So, if you are looking for a good can opener for your home kitchen, I think it is safe to say that we’ve given you a few good solutions to that search.  I know, some people may complain that, for example, the Hamilton Beach can opener 76777 did not make the list, but the fact is that if I were to list all the decent or great can openers out there, you’d be reading a small book of some fifty pages, and that’s not fun for anyone, is it.  No, no it is not.

Now then, before this post draws to a close, let us first talk about what electric can opener you may find to be the best for your own needs.  We took a good, hard look at the reviewed can openers, and we considered the needs of the average person, and we found that the best of those reviewed is the Hamilton Beach 76606ZA Smooth Touch Can Opener (in whatever color you choose to purchase it in, really).  It is simple, it is well-designed, and Hamilton Beach has a decent reputation for not only putting out a good product, but a trustworthy one.

So, if you’re looking for an electric can opener that you can trust in the long term, you know which one to choose.
