Alright, perfect. Now that we have an overview, let’s get into the details of each of the vacuums!

1

Hoover BH52160PC - Reliable and Powerful

The first vacuum to make it onto our list is the Hoover BH52160PC. Hoover is one of the most familiar and most trusted brand names when it comes to vacuum cleaners, so it’s not surprising that a cordless handheld Hoover makes our list. So besides its sleek design, what makes the Hoover BH52160PC worth buying? Well let us tell you.

While the weight of your vacuum doesn’t matter a whole lot when you’re using an upright vacuum, it’s a huge factor when it’s a handheld because you’ll be carrying it around the entire time! This vacuum is very lightweight and clocks in at less than four pounds – very manageable. It’s also bagless, which most cordless handheld vacuums are, but it’s worth mentioning. The filter is reusable and very easy to clean. All you have to do is give it a quick rinse, let it dry, and you’re good to go! Since it’s reusable, you’ll be spending much less money on filters.

Now let’s talk about the battery. Right along with the weight of the vacuum, the battery is tied for the most important factor when purchasing a cordless vacuum. Firstly, the battery is actually interchangeable with any other cordless hoover vacuum! So if you have any of the cordless uprights, or a different cordless hoover – you can use the exact same battery, which is great! The battery also comes with an indicator so you know exactly how much life you have left and exactly when you need to charge. Another important feature is that this vacuum has fade free technology. This just means that the vacuum won’t lose any suction power as the battery dies, which is important in making sure you get the most of the battery life. The one downside to this battery is that it does take a long time to charge. But ultimately it’ll last you around 15 minutes, which is about average for a cordless handheld vacuum. One last thing, it also comes with a two-year warranty! So if something goes haywire before then, Hoover will replace your battery.

Overall, this is a very solid choice for a vacuum. It’s powerful, comes with a powered turbo tool which is great for this heavier messes, as well as a crevice tool making it both powerful and versatile. And at under $100, you really can’t go wrong. We highly recommend this vacuum.

PROS
  • Good for pet hair
  • Interchangeable battery with any Hoover cordless
  • Bagless
CONS
  • Heavier than most on our list
2

Black & Decker CHV1410L - Energy Efficient

Up next, we have another trusted name in household appliances, Black and Decker. The usual brand names make our list for a reason. Household appliances have a lot of moving parts and use a lot of specific technology, so it’s best to rely on brands that have proved themselves in the industry. Anyway, let us tell you what makes the Black & Decker CHV1410L worth buying.

Something that doesn’t affect performance but something that we think makes a difference when you have to do household chores, the vacuum looks sleek and nice. The look does have a bit of functionality in this case however. The dirt bowl is actually clear which is perfect because it allows you to see exactly how full it’s getting and when you’ll need to empty it. All you have to do with this one is empty it in the trash or give it a quick rinse in the sink and you’re good to go. Filters can sometimes take a while to dry, but this bowl can be dry with the wipe of a towel.

The Black & Decker CHV1410L also comes with multi surface cleaning attachments – a crevice tool as well as a brush. Side note: it’s important to make sure the cordless handheld vacuum you’re considering comes with a crevice tool as you’ll most likely be vacuuming hard to reach areas such a a seat in a car, stairs, or in couches. This vacuum is also extra tough on pet hair and has extremely powerful suction. It has cyclonic action when it sucks up the dust, helping to keep the filter clean and the power strong. In fact, this vacuum is so powerful, we think it could almost – and we say almost, replace your regular vacuum. It’s that versatile and that powerful.

Also if you’re concerned about the environment (and we all should be!), this vacuum uses 50% less energy than most other vacuums in this class! There’s also no memory affect on the battery. For most vacuums, in order to utilize the battery most efficiently, you have to drain the battery before you charge it, but since there’s no memory effect with this battery, you don’t have to. You’re free to use it for a few minutes here and there and pop it back on the charger, with absolutely no affect on the battery whatsoever. Just like the Hoover we recommended, this vacuum also features fade free technology, ensuring that you won’t lose suction as the battery loses charge.

This is a very powerful and versatile vacuum that we can’t recommend enough. It also comes with a two year warranty which is always comforting. If you need something powerful enough for pet hair but also want something portable, we highly recommend the Black & Decker CHV 1410L.

PROS
  • Great on multiple surfaces
  • Energy efficient
  • No memory effect on battery
CONS
  • On pricier end of spectrum
3

Dyson V6 Trigger - Ergonomic and Powerful

Alright, I think this was to be expected – we have to include a Dyson on our list. We recognize that they’re one of the most expensive vacuums on the market but the question we want to answer is, is the price actually worth it? And after spending a significant amount of time reviewing, we dare to say that it is. Let us explain.

The main thing that sets Dyson apart from the rest of the vacuums on the market is its motor. All of their vacuums, including this one of course, is powered by the Dyson Digital Motor which more powerful than any other motor you’ll find in a cordless handheld vacuum. This, of course, is important when it comes to suction. You’ll find that this Dyson is able to handle heavier messes than most and will rarely lose suction.

Another features that helps the Dyson V6 Trigger keep up its suction is that it has a two-tier radical cyclone setup. This helps to increase airflow which allows for more powerful suction, as well as helping to capture more fine dust. Another Dyson trait that we see on this vacuum is that it’s very ergonomically designed, making it easy and comfortable to use.

The Dyson V6 Trigger operates on a lithium ion battery and has a run-time of about 20 minutes, slightly higher than the industry average. A couple of other useful features regarding the battery. It operates on a trigger, meaning that the vacuum is only going when you’re holding down the trigger. This allows you to really focus the energy when you’re vacuuming and not just walking around. Also, if you do have an exceptionally heavy mess that you need to clean, it features a Max Power Mode (which only lasts for six minutes) that will increase its power and allow you to pick up virtually anything. It also features fade free suction, like the previous two. It has a fast recharge time only taking an hour or two to fully recharge.

It of course comes with a brush tool as well as a crevice tool. It’s also exceptionally easy to release the dirt – you just have to press one button and it falls out of the bottom into the trash, a very cool feature. Another area where this Dyson really shines is that is cleans car upholstery really well. So if you’re frequently using your cordless handheld to clean the car, this is a good option.

Overall this vacuum is powerful, versatile, ergonomically designed, and has a few extra bonus features that we feel make it worth the price tag. It’s also a great way to test out a Dyson at a lower price point if you’re considering buying an upright Dyson. We have no doubt you’ll be satisfied purchasing this.

PROS
  • Great design
  • Long battery life
  • Easy to release dirt
CONS
  • Expensive

Black & Decker BDH2000PL - Exclusive Pivoting Nozzle

This is the second Black & Decker vacuum to make our list, with another one to come. While the other one was a powerful and reliable vacuum, this one has a couple of upgrades that we think gives it the extra edge.

Unlike the first Black & Decker, this one features cyclonic action which as we explained, spirals the dust and debris away from the filter to keep suction strong and the filter going longer. It also features a three stage filtration system which also helps to keep the filter going longer and allows it to suck up larger debris. Another important thing to note is that this vacuum does come with both a crevice and brush tool that stay attached to the vacuum! This makes it easy to keep track of them so you don’t lose them and also keeps them handy to toss on whenever you need to use them while vacuuming.

It also features a translucent dust bowl which again, makes it easy to know exactly when you need to empty it. It also has an easy sliding door that makes it simple to evict the dirt. To give it a more thorough cleaning, all you have to do is rinse the dust bowl in the sink.

The battery on this one comes with a two year warranty as well and also features fade free technology. Another plus side to this Black & Decker is that it charges much quicker than its counter part.

Okay, the main selling feature to this vacuum is that it comes with an exclusive pivoting nozzle. The nozzle that you see in the photo actually goes about 90 degrees up and 90 degrees down, allowing you extra flexibility to truly reach anywhere that you need to. It’s useful if you’re trying to get underneath the couch, underneath a seat in the car, or even on top of your curtains.

The one negative thing we have to report is that this vacuum is reported to be jarringly loud, at least for a handheld. Although extra power and extra features have to come at a cost sometimes, so we still highly recommend this vacuum.

PROS
  • Useful pivoting head
  • Charges quickly
  • Translucent dust bowl
CONS
  • Extremely loud

Bissell Pet Hair Eraser - Ultimate Pet Vacuum

This is the first Bissell to make it onto our list, and also the fist vacuum to tout being able to get rid of pet hair so easily. It’s very rare to find cordless handheld vacuum that’s able to pick up pet hair efficiently, let alone one that’s willing to name itself the Bissell Pet Hair Eraser – but we think it might just live up to its name!

It comes with a dual action filtration system, which is made to extend the filter life and it does just that. A vacuum meant to pick up pet hair should come with either a dual action filtration system, or triple action filtration system. What makes it so good at picking up pet hair is two things. One is just how powerful it is, it just plain has the suction power to pick it up from carpet, upholstery, or wherever. It also has a brush on it that was specially designed to be able to pick up pet hair and it delivers on its promise. The brush is motorized and is able to detach to add on the crevice tool when needed. It specializes in bedding, upholstery, couches – pretty much anywhere with fabric material.

Once you have all the dirt and pet hair, it’s especially easy to empty the canister. The Bissell Pet Hair Eraser claims a feature on our list that we’ve only seen on the Dyson – a one-touch emptying system. This is especially useful with pet hair as you don’t want the risk of the hair going everywhere, especially if you’re allergic.

Despite being so powerful, it is still surprisingly lightweight clocking in at only three pounds! On a full charge, the battery lasts around 18 minutes which is slightly higher than the industry average and pretty good considering how powerful this vacuum is. And an added bonus, it has a great design which is something that we always appreciate.

If you’re looking for a powerful handheld vacuum that can tackle the pet hair in your home, without having to lug out your upright, full-sized vacuum – we cannot recommend the Bissell Pet Hair Eraser enough. It’s one of the best cordless vacuums for pet hair and we’re confident you’ll be impressed by its power and versatility. And another added bonus, Bissell has exceptional customer service. So if for some reason anything does go wrong, you know you’ll have the support of Bissell to resolve your issue.

PROS
  • Great for pet hair
  • One button to empty canister
  • Good customer service from Bissell
CONS
  • On the larger side

Black & Decker HNV220BCZ01FF - Colorful and Cheap

Black & Decker is dominating this category – but it’s for good reason. They have a wide range of different vacuums that suit the needs for a lot of different people and at a wide range of prices. Next up we have a very inexpensive Black & Decker model coming in at under $40, which is one of the cheapest cordless handhelds on our list. Okay, so we know it’s cheap, but is it functional?

In short, yes! It is very functional. It’s also extremely lightweight, weighing an astonishingly light 2.3 pounds! So you’re able to use this vacuum for as long as you want and there’s no possible way you’ll get tired. Like all other vacuums on our list, it does come with a crevice tool, which is important to look out for when considering cordless handheld vacuums! It comes with an upholstery brush as well, and it works magic on couches, car seats, curtains, and anything else you can think of!

As far as the design of the vacuum, it’s incredibly useful because the container is translucent! Again, allowing you to see exactly when it’s getting full so you can empty it appropriately. This is also the only vacuum on our list that comes in a bunch of different colors! Not the most important, but it’s nice to be able to choose what you think looks best. Most vacuums you’re able to purchase an additional wall charger but this is one of the few that actually just comes with a wall charger! Super easy to pop on and off when you need it.

The battery in this Black & Decker gives some of the longest battery life that we’ve seen! Similar to the Dyson, you have to press a button in order to initiate suction. This can be viewed as annoying, but we view it as a plus because that means the battery is only going exactly when you need it. This allows the vacuum to be able to go for over 30 minutes in some cases! That is exceptionally high for such a powerful vacuum. The one downside to the battery is that there is no charging status indicator, which can be annoying.

Overall for the price and the nice little bonus features (wall charger, press-to-vacuum, variety of colors), we think this is a great vacuum. The filter also lasts for a long time so you won’t find yourself having to replace it very often saving you that little extra money. While it does have very powerful suction for a small vacuum, we do want to caution that it’s not the best with pet hair. But still – for around $30, you can’t go wrong and we say give this vacuum a go.

PROS
  • Comes in different colors
  • Extremely light
  • Comes with wall charger
CONS
  • Not great for pet hair
  • No charging status indicator

Stanley Black & Decker FHV1200W - Cordless Handheld Hybrid

Okay this is the last Black & Decker to top our list but we think it’s also for a good reason! Black & Decker is great at coming out with versatile designs that work for everyone, and they did it again with this design. This vacuum is an interesting cross between a true handheld and a more typical, upright or canister vacuum.

As you can tell from the photo, you’re able to carry the vacuum and use it as is but you’re also able to unhook the hose and use it to get into crevices and other harder to reach places! And at four feet long, you’re able to reach just about anywhere. Of course this comes with a crevice tool as well as a brush tool but this Black & Decker also comes with a pet tool! And being such a powerful small vacuum, it’s great at picking up pet hair. While this vacuum might look heavy and annoying to carry around, it’s really not. It is on the higher end at five pounds, but still very very manageable.

It also boasts a three sage filtration system for clean air exhaust. Another great perk is that the canister is very easy to empty and clean. A feature that this vacuum has that no other one does, is that the filter is actually dishwasher safe! How amazing is that? When your filter finally needs a thorough clean, all you have to do is throw it in the dishwasher and you’re good to go. We also just want to reiterate how great this vacuum is at cleaning pet hair! It’s a solid alternative to using your larger upright vacuum. It also comes with a storage caddy that stores the accessories alongside of it, keeping everything in its place.

With this unique design, this is one of the most powerful vacuums on our list. It’s an interesting cross between between a cordless handheld vacuum and a proper upright vacuum. It’s powerful and effective on larger messes but it still also remains energy efficient. We don’t really have anything significantly negative to say about this vacuum and think you’ll be pleased with the results!

PROS
  • Good cross between handheld and upright
  • Attachments work really well
  • Long hose
CONS
  • Heavier than most on the list

Overall, it is lacking in a few areas but we’re recommending this vacuum because of price to people who just want an entry level cordless handheld vacuum to have around.

PROS
  • Very light
  • Cheapest cordless handheld vacuum
CONS
  • Can lose suction if you don't empty canister often

Best Cordless Handheld Vacuum - Buyer's Guide

As with any electronic purchase, there are a lot of factors that you have to consider when purchasing a cordless handheld vacuum. And also with any electronic purchases, it can be tricky to keep track of all of those factors! Here are the important things that we think you should look out for when considering which cordless handheld vacuum is best for you!

Weight

One of the first things to consider – weight! While it might be easy to push around an 18 pound vacuum that’s on wheels, the same can’t be said when you’re carrying that same vacuum around the house! You want something light as you’ll probably be putting it into some difficult positions – over your head, behind the couch, or under a seat. Cordless handheld vacuums can be as light as under two pounds and as heavy as five pounds! Make sure to find one that you’ll actually be able to use.

Battery

Just as important, if not more important than the weight is the battery. These vacuums don’t have cords at all and you’ll be relying solely on the battery. So if the battery stops working, your vacuum stops working. Generally speaking, lithium ion batteries are the most efficient and reliable and will be what you want to look out for. Typical battery life is usually around 15 minutes but we’ve seen it go as high as 30 minutes, with a few floating around 20 minutes.

Another thing you’ll want to look out with the battery is if the vacuum has fade free technology. This just means that the as you run through your battery, you won’t lose suction. There’s nothing more frustrating to have a vacuum say it lasts 15 minutes, but after 10 it barely has any suction! Also look to see if it has a battery life indicator. This isn’t crucial, but it is helpful to know exactly how long you have when you’re around the house vacuuming.

Attachments

We stressed the importance of making sure the vacuum comes with a crevice tool! All recommended vacuums in this article do, but just be sure to look out for it. Typically a vacuum with come with a crevice tool and a brush tool, with some coming with bonus attachments like a pet tool. Think about what’s important for you and purchase accordingly.

Wet/Dry

If you plan to use your vacuum for any liquid messes, make sure it specifically says it’s a wet/dry vacuum and can handle it! There are a couple on our list, but you could seriously mess up your vacuum if it’s a dry vacuum and you use it on liquids.

Conclusion

There are a lot of good contenders for the best cordless handheld vacuum 2018 that made it onto our list. As always, we took into account a lot of factors of the vacuum, as well as reviews when trying to decide on which vacuum is the best and would suit most people’s needs. It was a close race, and came down to two but we think we found the best cordless handheld vacuum.

The winner that we recommend is the Dyson V6 Trigger. We know that Dysons are expensive but we truly believe that it outshines the competition in every way. Let’s do a quick review of why this vacuum is so amazing. It has a Dyson Digital motor, making it one of the most powerful ones on the list. It also has two tier radical cyclones which increases air flow and allows it to capture fine dust particles as well as larger messes. It has a Max power mode for even tougher messes, one button release to empty the dirt, 20 minute battery time, fade free technology, and it also recharges very fast. It’s also ergonomically designed, light, and very easy to carry around putting less stress on you while you vacuum.

Overall, we can say with the utmost confidence that this vacuum will suit all your fine dust and larger particle needs and that you won’t be disappointed. And hey, it’s nice to have such a beautiful household appliance laying around as well. Give the Dyson V6 Trigger a try, we’re sure you’ll love it.
