Keurig Single Serve Coffee Maker – The Classic Keurig

A few years back, a relative newcomer to the coffee world exploded onto the scene with a crazy idea.  ‘What if’ they said, ‘we take out the filter, and we take the grounds of the coffee, and we put them into a small plastic, biodegradable cup.  And what if, instead of running the water through it until the reservoir was empty, we just ran a set amount of water through it, decided on by the end user, to produce a certain amount of coffee with a certain strength’?  These people were laughed out of a lot of investor meetings. They were told that no one believed in the product, that no one would ever want to get their coffee that way, and that even if they did, no one would ever agree to license their products for being packed into these pods.

Keurig is now one of, if not the most, profitable coffee maker brands in the world. They have a great coffee maker for just about every use that you can think of, they have a wide variety of ‘K-cups’, and they have worked with most of the big names in coffee, like Folger’s, Dunkin Donuts, and even Starbucks, to license K-cups that can be used in their Keurigs.

This Keurig model is kind of their ‘standard’ offering.  There’s no LCD screen, there’s not a lot that you have to worry about, there’s a decent sized water reservoir, and the coffee maker works and works simply. The buttons on the front, the blue ones, allow you to make either a six, eight, or ten-ounce cup of coffee at will.

One of the best things about the Keurig design is how very simple it is.  Before the Keurig machine, you had to open the top, you had to put in a coffee filter, you had to fill the reservoir, you had to carefully measure out the grounds (or if you were one of those people with beans, you would have to grind them, then measure them), and then you had to wait while the slow ‘drip drip drip’ of the coffee maker eventually became enough coffee to help you to wake up and face the day.

On the other hand, the Keurig coffee machines are simple and quick.  In the case of this particular machine, you lift the handle, pop in the pod, and push the appropriate button for whatever sized cup of coffee you want.  It basically forces water through the K-cup, which is filled with coffee grounds that are tightly packed, which means that not only are you getting more flavor, but the pressure that is building up as the water is being forced through means that you are going to be able to have your cup of coffee much quicker.  The whole process of making a cup of coffee in a Keurig takes literally a minute, assuming you don’t spend twenty minutes trying to find exactly the right K-cup that you’re looking for.

Is there a downside?  Yes, but not a major one.  There’s the fact that you have to continuously refill the water reservoir to start with.  There’s the fact that the Keurig coffee maker makes it so easy to have a cup of coffee that you may find yourself drinking a lot more coffee than you would normally have.  And if you have heavy water, water with a lot more minerals and sediment than most, then you will have scaling issues over the long term that will require cleaning materials.  But these are almost all problems that you will have with almost any kind of coffee maker, really.

PROS
  • Designed to make sure that you are going to be able to get a cup finished easily and quickly
  • A wide variety of K-cups from a wide variety of businesses
  • Makes a delicious cup of coffee
CONS
  • Must be cleaned occasionally

Keurig 575 Coffee Single Serve Coffee Maker - The Deluxe Pod Coffee Maker

The last Keurig coffee maker that we took a look at was kind of their ‘standard’ package.  It was the no-frills option, the one that you can get that doesn’t have much extra to it.  This is basically the deluxe package, the one that has all the frills.

Let me be very clear here; none of the Keurig k-cup machines are hard to use.  They are all designed to be so simple to use that you could, if you have children, literally tell your child to start your cup of coffee, and if you’re someone who likes their coffee black, then you could even get your kid to make your coffee in its entirety.  Putting the children to work has never been so delicious!

This is an upgraded version of the standard Keurig, with a bit more reservoir size and with a few more functions.  The one that I would most like to bring to your attention, though, is strength control for your mixture.  Sure, you can make sure that any cup of coffee is stronger if you run less water through it (when using a K-cup, running hot water through it, the water that flows through at the very beginning is going to produce coffee that is much more dark and strong.  If you’re looking to get a strong cup of coffee, then, you would want to use the 4-ounce setting or the 6-ounce setting, as that coffee will be from grounds that are fresh and haven’t yet been diluted down and had their substance lessened.  The longer you run the water over the grounds, the less actual coffee you’re picking up from them, so the mixture begins to dilute).  Using the strength settings can make sure that however much coffee you’re looking to get, you’re getting the full strength out of the grounds by changing the pressure applied to them, even if you want to be sure that you’re going to be able to enjoy a full 10-ounce cup of coffee.

Another great function that this model has is a ‘self-cleaning’ mode.  Basically, what you do is lift up the top by the handle, as if you were about to put a K-cup in.  Then you look inside and make sure someone didn’t leave a K-cup in there (which happens all the time, especially with Keurig machines that are in places where they’ll be used by a lot of people), and if it is clear, you run it as if you were making a cup of coffee (make sure that you have a cup under the spigot before doing this).  It will run water through the Keurig machine, cleaning out the machine and the debris that are left behind when you make coffee and don’t clean it.  Having one of these machines myself, I would recommend that you do this about once every ten cups of coffee or so, or if you have someone else use it to make their preferred blend of tea.  Coffee and the debris of tea left behind in the machine do not taste good at all.

Is there a downside to this machine?  Really, there isn’t.  The only big problem is the cost of the K-cups (which is a lot lower than most people think, especially when compared to going to get a cup of coffee every morning), and then there’s the minor issue of scaling that you can clean with various formulas.

If you’ve got the money to spend, and if you’re looking for the top of the line Keurig machine so that you can enjoy your K-cups for the rest of the year, this is definitely the machine that you want to look into.

PROS
  • A lot of great features like strength control
  • Easy to use and quick to make a cup of coffee
  • Self-cleaning
CONS
  • Will only work with appropriate K-cups
  • Scaling issues

Keurig K15 Simple Serve Compact Coffee Maker – The Simplest Keurig

A lot of people, when they first wake up, barely feel like they’re people.  The world is groggy, fuzzy, and even the smallest thing can seem like a major grievance when you’re looking to get that first cup of coffee to start off your morning.  The world knows your pain when you wake up and you just cannot process difficult things until you’ve got your cup of coffee.

The Keurig series of coffee makers are not a complex piece of machinery.  They streamlined what used to be a much more stressful process, making sure that when you’re making coffee it is simple and easy to do so.  They make sure that you are going to be able to cut down on the time and hassle between waking up and being able to put that black liquid gold into your mouth to start your day.  At some point, though, Keurig must have looked at what they had already done and thought to themselves ‘no, this is still too much work.  Too many buttons, too many variables, too much thought goes into making this coffee.  We can definitely do something that is even simpler’.  This coffee maker is the result of that thought.

They took a system that was already simple, one that literally requires that you find the appropriate K-cup for the mixture that you want to make, put it in the Keurig machine, and then hit the button for the appropriate size, and then hit the ‘go’ button.  Not very hard, right?  Well, this machine took that work, and made it simpler.  Put it in, choose from three size options, and hit go.  No strength adjustments, nothing like that, just put it in and get a hot cup of coffee a minute later.

Now, there is a downside to that.  When you simplify, you also remove choices.  Sure, now you don’t have to even be able to form a full coherent thought to make your cup of coffee, but you are giving up the ability to take your coffee maker and use it to adjust strength, to adjust flavor, to adjust things like that.

Really, this is a great coffee machine for the kind of person who does not have time to make a lot of changes to settings in the morning, or to someone who wants the minimum amount of thought between them and their first cup of coffee.  It’s a great machine, even if it is a little strange how simple they wanted to make it.

PROS
  • Extremely simple to make use of
  • Quick to make your coffee
  • Easy to use and easy to clean
CONS
  • No control over strength or anything like that

Keurig K250 Single Serve Programmable Coffee Maker – The Mid-Range Offering

Thus far, we’ve looked at the low end and the high end of what the Keurig company has to offer.  But what about the mid-range, the medium ground, and what it can do for you?  Glad you asked!

You don’t need to have the newest, latest greatest technology in the coffee world to be able to have an enjoyable cup of coffee in the morning.  Believe it or not, there are people in this world, even in the richer nations in this world, who enjoy waking up and putting coffee beans in a small tin pan and then adding water and putting it over the flame of their stove. Some may even argue that the simpler ways, the old ways, are the more delicious ways to get coffee made.

Of course, I would disagree with all that.  Most people don’t have the time to wait for their cup of coffee to be made in a pan with water and beans.  They want their coffee now, and a good mid-range choice for that is the Keurig K250.

As with all the Keurig machines, it is exceedingly easy to use.  It has a reservoir on the back that will carry enough water for about 8 cups of coffee (depending on how large you make your coffee, anyway).  When you put the K-cup in, the coffee machine asks you how big you want to make the cup, with selections for four, eight, and ten-ounce cups of coffee.  Then it begins to brew. Simple and easy way to make your coffee, would you not agree?

One minor problem that has been noticed in this model in particular is that if you don’t clean it regularly, it can start to have trouble reading the K-cup.  Keurig K-cups are designed to only work with certain Keurig-approved designs.  That means that if you’re using some sort of coffee pod from a different company, or if you just try to cut down a filter and stuff it in there, the coffee machine is not going to work at all. However, if the machine doesn’t read that the K-cup in it is actually a Keurig K-cup, it will sometimes stop, even in mid-brew, or it will even decide not to start brewing at all.  In some cases, this can be remedied by just opening the Keurig coffee maker, and then closing the lid again without taking out the K-cup.  If that doesn’t work, you’re going to need to remove the K-cup and throw it away, let the Keurig machine clean itself, and then put in a new K-cup and start brewing again.

It also self-cleans.  Just open it, treat it like it is about to make a cup of coffee, and don’t put a K-cup in, and you’re going to be good to go to clean the machine.  Easy and hassle free, and it makes sure that your machine will last a long time.  It is recommended you clean once about every dozen cups of coffee or so, but if you clean it and it looks like the water is very brownish and murky, it may be advisable to clean it again.

But if you’re looking for a nice mid-range Keurig coffee machine, one that will allow you to enjoy coffee quickly and with a fair amount of great niceties to it as well, this is a great machine for you.  It’s also a great machine if you really want a coffee machine with a touch screen, but you don’t want to pay for the Keurig 575 coffee machine.

PROS
  • Easy to use and simple to brew
  • Makes a cup of coffee in a minute or so
  • Self-cleaning
CONS
  • Not as advanced as the 575
  • The scaling issue continues to be a problem

Nespresso GCC1-US-BK-Ne VertuoLine Evoluo Coffee Maker – The Nestle Machine

Most people know Nestle as the company that makes their favorite candies or ice creams, or that combines the two to make a great ice cream with candy bits in it.  But Nestle is also a well-known name in the coffee game, and one that has a long history of putting out great coffee grinds at a decent price.

So, it only makes sense that when it became obvious that it was going to be easy to get out into the world of pod fed coffee machines, they would be there to get involved. Especially after a variety of other companies, including the people at Starbucks, got involved in making their own competitors to K-cups and the Keurig machines.

Of course, they offer something that the fine people at Keurig do not offer.  Namely, the ability to make espresso with the machine. Espresso is basically a concentrated cup of coffee that is very small.  Now, you can make espresso into other things with the addition of cream and the like, but true espresso is about a 2-ounce cup of coffee that is served in a ridiculously small cup, but has the kick and caffeine of a full 8-ounce cup of regular coffee.  Espresso is a fancier drink, in general, than a cup of coffee, and while many of us are chugging coffee in the morning so that we can get up the strength to go out in the world and work again, people who drink espresso tend to want to calmly savor the flavor.  Being able to make both with one machine is something that is impressive, especially when you consider that there is a lot of work that goes into making espresso normally.  You have to have the grounds, you have to pack them tightly into a very small ladle-like device, you put that device to the machine, you run water through it, and there you have an espresso.  Then a lot of people like to add milk or cream that they steamed to heat up.

Of course, the Nestle VertuoLine Evoluo (which sounds like its name was created by a marketing team that was obsessed with making words sound Italian)  is designed such that it is capable of being a coffee machine as well as an espresso machine, otherwise it would not sell nearly as well.  The problem is that Nestle doesn’t have the vast licensing success that Keurig had.  You can go out right now to your local supermarket or department store that sells coffee, go into the coffee aisle, and find K-cups from the biggest names in coffee.  On the other hand, Nestle is not just the designer and owner of the hardware; they’re also a competing purveyor of coffee.  That means that it isn’t really in their best interest to let other people make coffee on their platform, unlike Keurig being just the hardware designer wanting everyone to license with them.  Because of this, you’re only going to get Nestle brands in this machine at this point.

All that said, it makes a great cup of coffee, and has all the ease of use that you would expect from something that was more or less a rip-off of the idea that Keurig had.  They have two differently sized pods, one of which is the espresso, the other which is the coffee pod, and they can make either one in a decent amount of time.  If you’re looking for something that can help you get your espresso addiction fed, this is really the only option for you that doesn’t require a lot of know-how and a lot of hassle. Definitely one of the best espresso coffee makers based on the cup design.

PROS
  • Can make espresso
  • Easy to use, a bit more difficult to clean
  • Makes the coffee quickly
CONS
  • Limited line of coffees due to licensing issues

Hamilton Beach 49980A Single Serve And Full Pot Coffee Maker – The Best Of Both Worlds

Maybe you’re one of those people who prefers to have their coffee the older fashioned way, the use of a filter and grounds, putting that coffee in the carafe, and letting that carafe sit there for a while on a warming plate while you’re getting ready to enjoy it, but you also realize that some mornings you wake up late, the kids don’t get ready fast enough, whatever may be the case, and you don’t end up having enough time to be able to enjoy making that cup the old-fashioned way, and sometimes it may be best that you have something that can work off of pods. This Hamilton Beach offering is the answer to both of those questions.

You can make coffee the old-fashioned way, if that is what you would prefer.  The Hamilton Beach 49980A is probably the best coffee maker for the office worker, because it allows you to do just that.  If you take it to work and leave it in the break room or at your desk, you can make up to 6 cups (roughly 30 ounces) of coffee in it, and once you take eight to ten ounces, you are always capable of leaving the remainder in the carafe on the hot plate, keeping it warm in order to make sure that you will have it at a good temperature when you’re ready for it later.  A word to the wise, though; if that’s the route you’re going to go, you do NOT want to pre-mix your coffee in the carafe.  By that, I mean that you do not want to add cream and sugar while it’s in the carafe.  Coffee is pretty easy to clean out of a carafe, and it generally doesn’t spoil.  Cream and milk spoil quite quickly, and even worse, sugar sticks, especially if it comes in contact with the heating element at the bottom (where sugar tends to end up) and gets melted to the bottom of the carafe.  Save yourself the hassle, and don’t mix your coffee in the carafe unless you’re going to be okay with buying another one.

But let’s be honest here; making coffee that way is no longer time-efficient, and there just isn’t that much evidence that the difference in taste is notable between the two.  So, if you want to waste your time dealing with the grounds, the coffee filter or filters (depending on how much money you spend on quality filters), you don’t need to worry; Hamilton Beach has you covered here.

They have their own knockoff of the K-cup.  It doesn’t come with as many controls and different settings as you will be able to find on the Keurig models, but their cups are capable of providing you with a fantastic and delicious 14 ounces of coffee, enough to fill those travel tumblers that everyone seems to be using these days.

So, if you want the best of both worlds, this is the place to look.

PROS
  • Easy to use
  • Provides both of the preferred ways to brew
  • Makes a lot of coffee at once
CONS
  • Needs cleaning a bit more often than competitive pod machines

Black & Decker DCM600B 5-Cup Coffee Maker – The Office Coffee Maker

If you go to most workplaces in the world, you will find a coffee machine.  The world runs on coffee.  Coffee is what allows air traffic controllers to spend hours staring at the same screen.  It’s what allows the people who work customer service for international companies to wake up at 7 am to sit at a desk for a day.  It’s what allows CEOs to power through meetings.  Coffee is so important that pretty much every workplace provides some form of coffee machine.

Some of the better, more employee-friendly workplaces out there offer a nice coffee machine, a Keurig or something similar.  But if you’re working at a place that doesn’t care that much about its employees, or you’re working somewhere that is being punished because they already managed to break the Keurig, then you have probably seen the Black & Decker 5-cup coffee maker.

It’s almost a ritual of working in an office space, really.  You come into work, you find out that you’re the first one in the office, you go into the break room or the lounge or whatever they’re calling it, and you find that there’s no coffee (and of course there’s no coffee, there’s no one there!).  You have to fill the reservoir with water to make the coffee, then you have to put in the filter, and then you have to put in the grounds.  Some places are very cheap with their filters, so in that case you may have to use two of them.  Then you begin the slow process of filling a fourteen-cup coffee carafe with seventy ounces of coffee at the pace of a dripping faucet.

That’s not to say that the Black & Decker coffee machine that we’re reviewing here is a bad one, not at all. It’s also not the best coffee maker, but rather it is the one that is pretty much exactly what you expect.  You can go into millions of places in the world, and you will still find this same kind of coffee maker.

One of the things that it does really have going for it is that the coffee maker has one-button operation. You put the coffee grounds in the filter, put the filter in the coffee maker, fill the reservoir with water, and a couple of minutes later, you have enough coffee for you to have a cup and even to share a cup with a coworker (or to just fill your tumbler, if you’re not the kind of person who likes to share).

This offering isn’t a bad coffee machine by any means.  It’s just not anything extremely special, and really, it is the kind of coffee machine that you can find anywhere in the world.  What it does have going for it is that it is simple to operate and it is simple to keep the coffee warm on.

PROS
  • Designed to be very simple to use
  • Simple to clean, but it can still take a fair amount of time to clean
  • A coffee maker design that you can find almost anywhere in the world
CONS
  • Simplistic
  • Standard
  • Takes a long time to make enough coffee to drink. If you’re using it at home, you may want to start it before you begin cooking breakfast or hop in the shower or what have you

Cuisinart DCC-3200 14-Cup Coffee Maker – The Deluxe Coffee Fiend Choice

Most coffee machines that you can buy for your home or for your workplace will make about 5 or 6 cups of coffee at a time, which is about 25 to 30 ounces.  That means that if you’re drinking the usual 2 cups of coffee per person that fills a coffee mug, you can get 2 or 3 cups out of each full carafe, which isn’t bad, but it isn’t great, either.  This Cuisinart offering, on the other hand, allows you to make 14 cups of coffee at once, which amounts to a whopping seventy ounces of coffee, or easily enough coffee for 7 to 9 people, depending on how much coffee you drink (and how much you make the coffee stretch by adding cream and sugar to it).

Of course, it’s a Cuisinart, so that means that not only is it a reliable piece of kitchen appliance that has a fair amount of design thought put into it, but it means that It is liable to have some very nifty features that you wouldn’t normally think of, as well.  In this case, the coffee maker has 24-hour programmability.  What that means is that you can set the coffee machine to start a pot at a certain time, say about when your alarm is going to go off to get you up for the day, and that when you put in that information and get it started, assuming that you load it with grounds and water and filter as required, it will begin making your coffee.

Sounds great, doesn’t it? You don’t even have to actually touch it so long as you set it the night before!  Another great thing about this machine is that it is self-cleaning which means that, much like when you use the Keurig to clean itself, you can clean this coffee maker the same way.  Just being the process like you normally would, sans coffee grounds and filters, and you will be ready to go to get it to begin cleaning.

What’s the downside here? Well, to begin with, it is still a slow-drip coffee maker. These coffee makers tend to take a decent amount of time to make coffee, and when you’re looking to fill a 70-ounce carafe, that means you can be looking at a fair amount of time spent waiting.  There’s also the big issue that you run into here that you don’t really run into with smaller carafes and coffee makers of accidentally under-filling the filter with grounds and ending up with bland or watered down coffee.  If you’re making a whopping five or six cups, that’s not as much a fear or a risk, because you’re just not making that much coffee.  But if you’re making an immense seventy ounces of coffee, that can be a real worry, and there is only one thing worse than bland coffee; decaf.

Still, it’s a great coffee maker, and it offers the biggest capacity of coffee makers on sale that are also quality products, which is great if you’re looking to supply an office or you’re a caffeine addict.

PROS
  • Simple to use
  • Clock settings to make coffee without you having to start it manually
  • Self-cleaning
CONS
  • Takes a long time to fill that carafe
  • Real threat of making bland coffee when you make that much at once

Mr. Coffee DRX5 4-Cup Coffee Maker – The Model That You Find In Every Hotel Ever

Almost every hotel in the world offers a free coffee machine for use in the room (as well as many of them going so far as to offer you a sample of various cheap coffees that you can make in the room free of charge).  It’s a standard amenity that most places don’t even go so far as to make mention of when you look to stay there under the ‘amenities’ list.

There’s a reason that it is in almost every hotel room, too.  It’s a very affordable model of coffee machine, one that you can easily afford on almost every budget.  It is functional and useful, but not so nice that people who are staying in the hotel are likely to steal it.  And, most importantly of all, it has the ability to make coffee on a delayed timer.

Why does that matter?  Well, whether you are making coffee at home, at the office, or even in a hotel room you’ve rented for the day, there are few things that are better than waking up to the smell of coffee or showing up to the office to find that there is already coffee in the pot. If you know that you’re going to have more important things to do in the morning, or if you know for fact that you’re going to be running late, and even if you just don’t want to deal with the hassle of making a cup of coffee when you first wake up, you can use the Mr. Coffee DRX5 to make coffee without you having to start the pot.  All you have to do is set the timer, make sure that the reservoir is appropriately filled with water, ensure that you have put in the coffee filter and the grounds, and then you will be able to rest easy, knowing that the coffee should be there when you wake up or when you’re ready for it, provided that there is no loss of power.

This machine is just a simple piece of equipment that can make coffee for you when you tell it to, and nothing more.  If you’re looking for something fancy, or if you’re looking for something that can make espresso, look elsewhere.  If you’re looking for a coffee machine that will make you a full cup of coffee in under a minute, this also may not be the best way to go.  But if you want a machine that will prepare four cups of coffee, or enough coffee for two people to have a decent drink of coffee in the morning, and one that will do it with you having to turn it on, then this is definitely the one that you are going to want to be looking into for your needs.

PROS
  • Easy to use
  • Time delay coffee making
  • Simple and understated design
CONS
  • Only makes a maximum of 4 cups of coffee at a time

Hamilton Beach 12 Cup Coffee Maker 48464 – The Hamilton Beach Large Capacity Design

When it comes to an appliance brand that you can trust, there are few names out there that are as well trusted as Hamilton Beach.  And the fact is that when it comes to making sure you will be able to find a good coffee maker, as with so many home kitchen appliances, Hamilton Beach has a variety of lines for you to choose from, so you can get the one that best suits your needs.

This is not the kind of coffee maker that most homes will need.  12 cups of coffee is a lot of coffee.  It’s sixty ounces of coffee, and when you consider that most people drink a mug of coffee that is, at most, twenty ounces of coffee, you are going to find that even with a ‘nuclear’ family with a husband, a wife, and two kids, you’re going to still be left with twenty spare ounces of coffee or so.

That’s not to say that it shouldn’t or couldn’t be used in the home as a personal coffee maker. It comes with a programmable start time, which means that, once again, so long as you make sure that you fill it with water and coffee grounds (and the requisite filters, of course), you are going to be able to wake up to coffee or have a cup brewed ready for you whenever it is that you normally like to take your coffee.  But if you’re going to do that, you may want to start it making your coffee about ten minutes before you’re going to want to have that cup of coffee in hand, because it can take a while to fill that sixty-ounce carafe. If you’re a coffee fiend, though, or if you’re one of those crazy people who likes to fill a giant tumbler entirely with coffee and cream and sugar, then this may be the best coffee maker for you.

However, where this machine really shines is when it’s being used for a group of adults, like at a small business or something similar. You can set it the night before, make sure that at five or whenever quitting time is you fill it with water and coffee and filters, and then you can come in to not just a bit of coffee in the morning, but enough coffee that the first five or six people to come in can have a decent sized mug full of coffee upon arrival.  This is the kind of thing that can make a day at work more bearable, and even better, it helps to raise the morale of workers, knowing that they’re going to have coffee.  If you’re running a small business, you can even make sure that everyone gets a cup, and tell the last person to get coffee out of the carafe to start a new pot as necessary.

It also comes with automatic shutdown timer that can be set from 0 to 4 hours so that you will be able to protect the carafe.  If you leave a carafe on a hot element, there are two things that happen.  First, you basically simmer the water out of the coffee, which makes it taste terrible and slowly makes the fluid go out of the coffee.  The second thing that happens is that you run the risk of causing real damage to the carafe, even going so far as causing it to melt, crack, or break.  Setting an auto-shutdown on the heating of the coffee is a great way to protect it.

If you’re a caffeine addict, or you’re looking for a good coffee maker for your new small business, then this is a great place to go to start.  Hamilton Beach makes great equipment that will last for a long time, too.

PROS
  • Can make a lot of coffee at once
  • Timer is easy to use
  • Auto-off timer is a great function
CONS
  • Takes a long time to make a pot of coffee

Kitchen Supremer French Press Coffee And Tea Maker – The French Connection

There are people in the world who swear by the French press, proclaiming that there is no other coffee maker that will make coffee just as good.  There are also people, like myself, who can’t really taste the difference.  If you’re interested in the way that your coffee tastes, the French press is something that will appeal to you so that you can make the most delicious coffee ever, but if you’re more of a casual coffee drinker who just drinks it for that extra pep in your step, you probably won’t care that much.

Every other coffee maker that we have reviewed thus far is automated to some degree.  Sure, you have to put in a K-cup or a pod or some grounds and a filter, and you have to add water, but other than that, you just push a button and walk away and your coffee really mostly makes itself.  The French press, though, is a much more interactive experience.

Here’s how you use a French press.  First, a lot of experts will tell you that you have to have a grinder, because freshly ground beans taste better allegedly, but if you don’t want to deal with a grinder, you can just use pre-ground.  Anyhow, take the ground coffee beans and put them in the press as fast as you possibly can (the fresher ground they are, the better they taste, allegedly). Then you add some coarse ground coffee beans as well (the ratio is something of debate).  Then you add water that has been boiling, making sure that you cover all the ground coffee with it.  Next, you will give it a stir with something flat (chopsticks, butter knives, whatever), which will let the bloom come out. Now, you steep it, meaning you put the plunger and filter on the top and you begin to push it down.  This pushes the grounds to the bottom, while the coffee remains floating at the top. Make sure that you push it straight down and do so slowly and methodically; if the plunger and filter end up cock-eyed, you are going to end up with coffee grounds in your coffee.  Once the grounds are pressed all the way to the bottom, you can pour, still holding the grounds to the bottom while pouring.

Does this sound like an involved process?  It truly is.  But if you are searching to get the best flavor out of your coffee, this is how people claim that you must do it.  Your average French press will make about 4 cups of coffee (it can be more or less depending on a variety of factors, as well as how well you perform the actual steeping), and you will end up with about twenty ounces of coffee in the end.

If you’re busy, if you’re looking for something simple, if you’re looking for coffee on the go, this is not for you.  This is for the person who has ten to twenty minutes to spend, carefully boiling water and then working to make sure that it tastes its very best when the coffee is added to it.

PROS
  • The most flavorful coffee
  • Makes a beautiful cup
  • A very zen experience when making it
CONS
  • Takes a lot of time
  • Requires constant input while making the coffee

Mr Coffee BVMC-EVX23 Coffee Maker – Mr. Coffee Jumbo

The first Mr. Coffee that we reviewed was kind of a small use, small batch kind of thing. It was the kind of coffee maker that makes, at most, enough coffee for one or two people, depending on how much you drink. This maker is three times as big, and three times as useful to you if you’re looking to make sure that you are going to be able to provide a lot of people with the caffeine that they need to get through the day.

Sure, you can use this yourself. Most people don’t really need to drink 12 cups (sixty ounces) of coffee a day, let alone in one setting, but if that is the kind of thing that you are into, then this is a great coffee maker for you to look into buying. It comes with a programmable clock, which means that not only can it tell you the time (if that’s the kind of thing you think you need a coffee machine to do for you), but it will also allow you to utilize it in order to make coffee without you having to touch it. All you have to do is set the clock appropriately, make sure it has the grounds and the water that it is going to need in order to make your coffee, and the coffee maker is good to go. If you’re looking for a good coffee pot for morning coffee drinking, this is a great choice for you.

However, it works better in a business or office setting, really. This is definitely a coffee pot that is designed to be used for multiple people who all really need their caffeine, and believe it or not, it has a nifty feature that is designed around the idea of office use; the auto-shutoff. When you make a pot of coffee in the office, and you keep it warming so that anyone will be able to enjoy it, most of the time that’s about as far as responsibility for the coffee maker goes. Theoretically, the person who drains the pot should shut it off (or brew a new pot), but at some point the pot is not going to be drained any further, and that means that you are going to have a coffee pot sitting on heat for a long time. If that happens, it can eventually lead to the pot breaking, cracking, melting, or being caked with burned coffee. Not something that you want to have happen, because it means you have to buy a new carafe.

If you’re looking for an easy to use pot that will serve a lot of people, this is definitely one that you should consider.

PROS
  • Easy to use
  • Can be set up to make coffee without you having to manually start it
  • Auto shutoff
CONS
  • Takes a while to fill the carafe

Best Coffee Maker - Buyer's Guide

Picking a great coffee maker for your use, whether it is more business or office-oriented or designed to be used in the home is something that will require that you understand a little bit about the coffee machine. Most people don’t care to understand more about their coffee machines, because it’s not a very interesting topic, but if you’re looking for answers to your questions, here are just a few of the answers to more common questions

Do The Pods Make Coffee Taste Any Different Than Normal Grounds?

This is the subject of a lot of argument among people who think that they are coffee snobs. The reality is that if there’s a difference, it is minuscule and hard to find. You also have to consider that, when you are making coffee with pods or K-cups, you are going to be able to take advantage of the technology in order to save yourself a lot of time and a lot of hassle. Time is money, after all.

It’s commonly said that the French press is the superior way to have coffee prepared. But, again, it’s hard to tell much of a difference for the average person, and there’s very little evidence that there is actually any difference between them chemically.

At the end of the day, it is all nothing more than an opinion, and if you think that the taste of French press is so much better than the usual pre-ground or the K-cup, then you can absolutely go and get your own French press, grind your coffee minutes before you drink it, and turn every cup into an event. But for the vast majority of people, that isn’t what they want, and it definitely isn’t how much work they want to do in order to be able to get a cup of coffee.

Is Espresso Better Than Regular Coffee?

It’s simply different, no better or worse. It’s supposed to be a different experience, and there are different things you can do with it. People either drink an espresso in a small cup that holds something like 2 ounces of it, or it is served in a regular sized mug that involves steamed milk or cream being mixed with it. It can be a bit sweeter, too, and it is a very delicious experience. However, it’s not mean to be gulped down like you would a regular coffee, but rather to be sipped slowly, at a café while you’re sitting outside.

Picking out the right coffee for you is part of the process of figuring out how you like to drink your coffee. You may need to try a couple of different blends, a couple of different creamers, some of you may even need to try a couple of different mixtures of sugar before you get it just right, but if you keep trying new things, you’ll eventually find the coffee that you most enjoy.

Conclusion

Coffee is an inescapable part of life for the average person. It’s the kind of thing that gives you the energy to get out of your bed and to go face the world, or that makes your dinner or dessert a little bit tastier. It’s the kind of thing that allows you to ensure you are going to be able to get through your work day. Because of that, the coffee maker that you pick and use is very important.

But there can be only one winner of the title ‘best coffee maker’, and as hard as it may be to pick that one, it is doable. The winner is the K250 Keurig coffee maker. It is well-designed and easy to use, and the right blend of price, ease of use, and deliciousness. It’s also better than the Nespresso because you can get a wide variety of flavors and makes in the K-cups, as compared to the relatively small selection that Nestle has. It’s a great coffee maker for anyone, and it works so quickly to deliver that amazing coffee.

Whichever of these coffee makers you spend your money on, though, you’re bound to get a great coffee maker that will provide you with the delicious black stuff you need to survive.
